Bridging the Gap

Committee Chair Responsibilities:

1. Suggested sobriety: 2 years.
2. Attend at least 6 Area Treatment Facilities meetings per year and report to the district on activities.
3. Form, maintain, and facilitate a District 4 Treatment Facilities Committee made up of GSRs and interested members.
4. Encourage GSRs to promote Treatment Facilities “Bridging the Gap” program with their groups.
5. Send letters to all treatment facilities in the district explaining what A.A. does and does not do. (The video “Hope: Alcoholics Anonymous” has been a useful tool for both staff and patients.)
6. Coordinate with H & I and facility administration, to take A.A. meetings into facilities within the district.
7. Encourage group participation for them to have a representative on the T.F. committee.
8. Coordinate temporary group member contact information for inpatients being released.
9. Arrange purchase and distribution of literature for these groups and meetings.
10. Seek to understand, respect, and adhere to all treatment facility regulations in the district.
11. Make information about A.A.’s function and purpose available to treatment staff.

District 4 Public Information activates have fallen into four categories:

1. Distributing contact cards and AA pamphlets (A Brief Guide to AA and Introduction to Alcoholics Anonymous) to help prospective members find AA meetings. This seems to have been our most effective activity. We have delivered more than 600 copies of the contact cards to places where they are most likely to fall into the hands of alcoholics in need of help. The places where we dropped off our literature are listed below.
2. Visiting and writing letters to school nurses and to the student health departments of several Long Beach schools. This effort has proven to be a waste of our time. For whatever reason, schools seem reluctant to address the problem of alcoholism among their student populations.
3. Writing articles on the subject of alcoholism for submission to such publications as Good Housekeeping, the AARP magazine, and other publications. To date, none of our articles have been accepted.
4. Setting up an Alcoholics Anonymous table at the Bixby Knolls First Friday event on May 1, 2026. Our table had a six-foot banner reading ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS and a fully stocked literature rack. Our exhibit attracted only three individuals even though hundreds of people passed by us. We think that some people who may be wondering if AA could be of help to them might also be reluctant to be seen talking to AA representatives for fear that others might assume they had a drinking problem. Furthermore, the First Fridays event is mostly about visiting art galleries, shopping, eating, and drinking. AA may seem like an unwelcome intruder in this fun-time environment, a conclusion we came to after setting up our display and experiencing the event first-hand.

The primary purpose of members involved in Public Information Service work is to carry the AA message to the still suffering alcoholic.

Public Information conveys AA information to the general public through activities such as providing AA resources and literature to schools, colleges and libraries.

Also, Public Information Committee members may give AA informational talks to civic and city organizations as well as schools and public service departments.

Insuring local media have accurate information and providing them with the latest AA public service announcements are also ways the Public Information Committee can be useful.

While there is some overlap between PI and CPC, Public Information serves the community at large, in the hope that doing so, will ultimately help the alcoholic.

District 04 is here to answer any of your PI questions and to help facilitate your Public Information Committee goals (excerpts taken from the Public Information Workbook 1994)

1. Attend all (no less than 6) Area Public Information Committee meetings and report to the District on Pl activities.

2. Form and maintain a District Public Information Committee made up of GSRs and other interested members.

3. Develop District-approved and -funded PI projects (e.g., those found in the “Public Information Workbook”). Report on their status at District meetings.

4. Provide the DCMC a monthly written report on the status of all Public Information projects that District 4 ls involved with.

Literature Chair: Vacant

Literature published by A.A. World Services, Inc. is a resource for the recovering alcoholic and for anyone who wants to find out about Alcoholics Anonymous, its history, and how it works. General Service Conference-approved literature reflects the group conscience of the Fellowship of A.A. and includes the book Alcoholics Anonymous (affectionately known by members as the Big Book); Daily Reflections, a compilation of spiritual reflections contributed by members; books written by one of A.A.’s co-founders (such as Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions and As Bill Sees It); and a wide variety of pamphlets and booklets that deal with the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous: Recovery, Unity, and Service. A.A.W.S. publishes literature in three languages, English, Spanish and French, which reflect the three primary languages spoken in the General Service Conference structure of the United States and Canada. We also publish and license translations of the Big Book and other literature in languages and countries around the world, much of which is available in the literature catalog published by A.A. Chair’s Responsibilities:

1. Suggested sobriety: 2 years.
2. Attend all (no less than 6) Area Literature Committee meetings and report to the District on A. A. literature activities.
3. Become familiar with the contents ‘of A. A. literature in order to be responsive to inquiries.
4. Encourage A. A. members to become acquainted with A. A. Conference-approved literature.
5. Inform District members through displays and other suitable methods, of all available Conference-approved literature, literature catalog, audiovisual material, and other special items.
6. Maintain a supply of “GSR Starter Kits” for the GSR School.
7. Develop and maintain literature for District 4 as needed.
8. Communicate suggestions regarding proposed additions or changes in Conference-approved literature and audiovisual material to the District, the Area, and the General Service Office.
9. Maintain, update and distribute the District 4 “Welcome To General Service” pamphlet, annual calendar of events, and other information useful to District members.
