Service in Action: The Standing & Co-coordinating Committees of Panel 74

Welcome to the central hub for District 04 (MSCA 09) General Service committees. In Alcoholics Anonymous, our Twelfth Step reminds us that carrying the message is the lifeblood of our personal recovery and the fellowship as a whole. While individual groups take care of their meeting rooms, our District Committees work together to reach the alcoholic who still suffers in the broader community—whether they are in a hospital, a correctional facility, an online space, or a professional setting.

Below you will find a comprehensive breakdown of our current standing and co-coordinating committees for Panel 74, their vital responsibilities, and how you can get involved to make a difference.

Standing Committees

1. Accessibility Committee

• Panel 74 Chair: Melissa
• The Mission: Ensuring that the AA message is available to everyone, regardless of physical, visual, auditory, or geographical barriers. The chair attends at least six Area Special Needs Committee meetings to bring vital resources and strategies back to District 04.

2. Archives Committee

• The Mission: Preserving our collective past so we can safeguard our future. This committee utilizes the Oral Histories Kit from GSO and manages the MSCA 09 Group History Forms in both English and Spanish.

3. Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC)

• The Mission: Providing information about AA to those who come into contact with active alcoholics through their professions (doctors, lawyers, clergy, social workers). CPC helps professionals understand how and why AA works.

4. Corrections Committee

• The Mission: Coordinating the vital work of individual AA members and groups who carry the message to alcoholics behind bars. This committee utilizes the official Corrections Committee Workbook to organize local institutional outreach.

5. Finance Committee

• Panel 74 Chair: Vacant | Email: finance@longbeachaa.org
• The Mission: Overseeing the financial health of the district, producing Budget to Actuals reports, and tracking midyear updates. The committee is currently seeking a chair to help manage the upcoming 2026 budget requests.

6. Grapevine/La Viña Committee

• Panel 74 Chair: Carol
• The Mission: Promoting our “meeting in print” and its Spanish-language counterpart. The chair attends at least six Area Grapevine Committee meetings to keep our district updated on new publications and audio resources.

7. GSR School Committee

• The Mission: Empowering General Service Representatives (GSRs) to effectively link their home groups to the broader AA structure. Conducts brief orientations 30 minutes prior to regular district business meetings.

8. LGBTQ+ Committee

• The Mission: Working actively to strengthen District 04’s ability to carry the recovery message safely, inclusively, and effectively to the LGBTQ+ community and all who seek help.

• The Mission: Keeping the district informed about AA World Services, Inc. conference-approved literature, pamphlets, and books, ensuring these invaluable recovery tools remain accessible to all.

10. Public Information (PI) Committee

• The Mission: Conveying the AA message to the general public through schools, health fairs, and media, using the official Public Information Workbook and Kit to maintain our tradition of anonymity.

• The Mission: Coordinating “Bridging the Gap” initiatives to help alcoholics transitioning from short-term treatment centers or detox facilities safely into the local AA fellowship.

• The Mission: Serving as the bridge between District 04 and local young people’s committees, demonstrating that sobriety is vibrant, active, and available at any age.

Committees of Panel 72: Carrying the AA Message in District 04

Within District 04 (serving the Long Beach area under Mid-Southern California Area 09), our general service structure relies on the dedication of our local committees. During Panel 72, these committees worked tirelessly to ensure that the hand of Alcoholics Anonymous remains available to the suffering alcoholic, to professionals, and to the community at large.

Below is an archive overview of the Standing and Co-coordinating Committees that comprised Panel 72, including their primary responsibilities and service scope.

Standing Committees of Panel 72

Standing committees are established to handle continuous, long-term service needs within the district. They align directly with Area 09 and GSO initiatives.

1. Website Committee

The Website Committee is responsible for maintaining, updating, and securing our digital presence. In an increasingly digital world, the district website serves as the virtual front door for both the public and active General Service Representatives (GSRs).

• Schedule: Meets monthly on the 4th Saturday of the month at 4:00 p.m.
• Focus: Keeping meeting schedules, event calendars, and district minutes accurate and accessible.

2. LGBTQ Committee

Approved as a new addition to the district at the June 2021 business meeting, this committee was created to address unique needs within the local fellowship.

• Focus: Fostering inclusivity and ensuring that LGBTQ alcoholics feel fully supported and informed about local service opportunities.

3. Grapevine Committee

The Grapevine Committee acts as the link between our local groups and AA’s “meeting in print.”

• Focus: Encouraging groups to appoint Grapevine Representatives (GVRs), managing magazine subscriptions, and highlighting Grapevine and La Viña literature as vital recovery tools.

4. Public Information (PI)

The primary purpose of PI is to carry the AA message to the general public.

• Focus: Utilizing GSO workbooks and kits to provide accurate AA information to schools, businesses, and local media, dispelling myths about the fellowship.

5. Literature Committee

This committee ensures that Conference-approved literature remains visible and available throughout the district.

• Focus: Informing groups about new and existing recovery pamphlets, books, and service material published by A.A. World Services, Inc.

6. GSR School Committee

New GSRs face a steep learning curve. The GSR School provides vital orientation to help them understand the service structure, the Twelve Concepts, and their role in the conference process.

• Schedule: Orientation is held the last Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom.

7. Archives Committee

The Archives Committee is tasked with collecting, preserving, and sharing the historical records of District 04’s groups and individuals.

• Focus: Developing a robust historical program utilizing GSO Oral Histories Kits and MSCA 09 Group History Forms.

8. Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC)

CPC focuses on establishing relationships with professionals who come into contact with active alcoholics in their daily work.

• Focus: Providing information to physicians, lawyers, clergy, educators, and social workers to explain how AA can serve as a resource for their clients.

9. Corrections Committee

The Corrections Committee coordinates the crucial work of carrying the AA message to alcoholics behind bars.

• Focus: Organizing meetings inside correctional facilities and facilitating “Prerelease Contact” programs to help transitioning individuals find meetings upon release.

10. Treatment Facilities Committee

Similar to corrections, this committee coordinates Twelfth Step work directed toward alcoholics in hospitals, rehabs, and detox centers.

• Focus: Managing “Bridging the Gap” initiatives to connect patients leaving treatment directly with a local AA member.

11. Accessibility Committee

This committee works to ensure that the AA message is accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or mental barriers.

• Focus: Assisting members with hearing, visual, or mobility impairments, as well as those who are homebound or facing significant language barriers.

12. Finance Committee

The Finance Committee oversees the district’s fiscal health, managing the budget and tracking group contributions.

• Focus: Ensuring that the district remains fully self-supporting and utilizing funds responsibly to fuel local service endeavors.

Co-coordinating Committees of Panel 72

Co-coordinating committees consist of autonomous service bodies that work closely alongside District 04 to harmonize efforts across overlapping geographic regions.

• Hospitals and Institutions (H&I): Focuses on distributing literature and hosting panels specifically within medical and clinical settings.
• Young People in A.A. (YPAA): Works with local youth fellowships to demonstrate that you are never too young to find recovery and get involved in service.
• Harbor Area Service Committee (HASC): Acts as our central intergroup liaison to maintain communication between general service and local central office operations.
